Historian Timothy Snyder Gets Austrian Cross Of Honor

U.S. scholar Timothy Snyder was awarded the “Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art” by Federal President Alexander Van der der Bellen in Vienna on September 23, 2020. The Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University was honored inter alia for his outstanding academic contributions in the field of the history of the Holocaust and totalitarism in Central and Eastern Europe.

"This decoration is dedicated to the world renowned and esteemed scholar who, in dealing with his subjects, succeeds in taking a new, unprecedented look at modern historical events," Federal President Van der Bellen emphasized in his laudation. "It is thus dedicated to the contemporary historian and public intellectual, but also to the (politically) active contemporary, the scholar and reviewer Timothy Snyder as well as to the author, i.e. artist Timothy Snyder".
