Saint Nicholas Rewards Hyde-Addison 5th Graders

Introducing American students to the cherished Advent tradition of Saint Nicholas’ Day, which is observed on December 6th by many Austrians, has become a staple of our participation in the Embassy Adoption Program.

During this year’s first virtual field trip on December 9, 2020, Ms. Connolly’s class of fifth graders at Hyde-Addison Elementary School was not only introduced to our country and language, but also to the legendary Bishop of Myra (and model for Santa Claus), who rewards only the good kids.

“I see all the students here are on my list. Names like Zylaa, LaViva, Jemiah, Dylan, Nicholas, and so many more. Students who love math, art, reading and PE. Students who are experts in Ballet, Basketball, Music, and Soccer. There's even a black belt in Taekwondo and an award-winning cheerleader in this group.  Most of all, the students at Hyde-Addison Elementary are kind, curious, and creative. In past years, on my visit to schools, I give gifts to all the students who make this list. Because of the pandemic, I cannot travel to see you.  But each of you will receive a special gift in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.”
