The event will be moderated by Austrian-born journalist Bettina Gordon-Wayne, who represents one of the biggest contemporary shifts in society: women between 35 and 44 are bearing more and more children, while the overall fertility rate in the U.S. has dropped to a historic low. Bettina, a first time mom in her 40s herself, will introduce her new book, “The Joy of Later Motherhood”, and her surprising findings about why women truly become mothers later in life.

Laurie Fields DeRose, Ph.D., who teaches at Georgetown University and is the Research Assistant Professor for the Maryland Population Research Center and the Director of Research in the World Family Map Project, will present her newest study “Gender Equity, Faith, and Fertility in the 21st Century” for the first time to the public.

As the last highlight of the evening, we will showcase the mothers of the SOS Children’s Villages around the world. Founded by Austrian Hermann Gmeiner shortly after WWII, SOS Children’s Villages is the world’s largest nongovernmental organization dedicated to the care of orphaned and abandoned children in 135 countries. SOS’s comprehensive approach includes family strengthening, long-term care, youth empowerment, and advocacy programs. When a child has no family to care for them, SOS welcomes them into a safe home where they grow up with one of the SOS families – and at the center of those families – are SOS mothers. Becoming a SOS mother is a true calling. SOS mothers dedicate their lives to caring for children in need and some have raised over 100 children. Neil Ghosh, CEO of SOS Children’s Villages USA, will attest to the strength, heart and impact of these women on the lives of vulnerable children around the world. Find out how SOS’s innovative holistic model results in a 100% high school graduation rate in the United States and gives children a proper foundation in life.

All proceeds from the sale of “The Joy of Later Motherhood” that evening will go to SOS Children’s Villages!
