The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign which takes place each year and runs from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day. It was originated by activists at the first Women's Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and is coordinated each year by the Center for Women's Global Leadership at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
In support of this civil society initiative, the United Nations Secretary-General’s campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women calls for global action to increase worldwide awareness and create opportunities for discussion about challenges and solutions. In 2017, the 16 days are observed under the overarching theme Leave No One Behind: End Violence against Women and Girls to underscore the importance of reaching the most underprivileged. As in previous years, orange is the thematic color unifying all activities.
On November 29, 2017, Ambassador Wolfgang Waldner and the whole team of the Embassy of Austria in Washington D.C. joined the movement by adding the signature color to their business attire. In Austria, landmarks like the Clock Tower in Graz or the Burgtheater in Vienna were lit in orange.
