On May 21, 2014, the Embassy of Austria together with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum hosted a special screening of the HBO documentary "50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus." The film which was produced in association with the museum chronicles the efforts of Gilbert Kraus and his wife, Eleanor - two Americans who undertook the successful rescue of 50 Jewish children from Vienna after Kristallnacht, the worst outbreak of organized violence instigated by the Nazi regime against Jews until this point.
The screening was followed by a Q+A session with filmmaker Steven Pressman and Paul Shapiro, Director of the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Museum as well as a buffet-reception. Sara Blumfield, Director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, together with Austrian Ambassador Hans Peter Manz delivered introductory remarks ahead of the screening.
