Women, Peace and Security SC-Res 1325

Resolution 1325 (2000) was unanimously adopted by the United Nations Security Council on 31 October 2000. It is the first resolution by the United Nations (UN) that specifically addresses the special impact of conflict on women and that stresses the significant and active role of women in all efforts aimed at promoting peace - from peace negotiations to the rebuilding of destroyed societies.

On 8 August 2007 the Austrian Government passed the Austrian Action Plan to implement Resolution 1325, which foresees actions to be taken at the national, regional and the international levels.

On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the adoption of Resolution 1325 in 2010 Austria decided to conduct a comprehensive review of its Action Plan. As a result of this process the Austrian Government adopted a revised Austrian Action Plan on 24 January 2012. The Action Plan aims at the promotion of the inclusion of women in peace processes, the strengthening of preventive measures against violence against women, the increased participation of women in international peace missions, as well as increasing the number of women in senior positions in the UN or the EU. A Working Group chaired by the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs reviews the implementation of the Action Plan on an annual basis.

The Eighth Annual Report on the implementation of the Action Plan was adopted by the Austrian Government on 14 July 2017 (in German language).

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the adoption of resolution 1325, a High-level Review took place in October 2015 in New York.  In preparation for the Review, a Global Study on the implementation of resolution 1325 was commissioned by the UN Secretary-General. In order to contribute ideas to the Global Study and as part of the Beijing+20 campaign launched by UN Women, Austria hosted an International Symposium on “Enhancing Women’s Share in Peace and Security” on 3/4 November in Vienna. In close cooperation with UN Women the event focused on certain aspects of resolution 1325 that have been underdeveloped so far, such as the role of (new) media in implementation of 1325. The main findings of the symposium, including a set of concrete recommendations addressed to States, international organizations, civil society and the media, were published in a policy paper in February 2015.
