In order to facilitate passport applications the Austrian Embassy will host consular days at the Austrian Honorary Consulate in Houston, Texas on March 18-20, 2020, where fingerprints for passport applications can be taken. Please note that minors are only fingerprinted from the age of 12, but their personal appearance is required regardless of age.

Applications for citizenship certificates, name declarations/name changes will be accepted as well (see the weblinks below for details and required forms and documents).

Please note when filing an application for a minor: The passport application for children under the age of 14 must be signed by both parents either in front of the Consular Officer when filing the application or before a notary public. If the parents are divorced, the divorce decree must be presented.

Minors over the age of 14 may apply for a passport themselves, provided that both parents have given their written consent (either in front of the Consular Officer when filing the application or before a notary public).

As soon as your appointment has been confirmed, please prepare your application and bring the original application and affidavit with all required original documents to your appointment in Houston.

Required documents for a passport application for adults:

1) Application form and affidavit for adults (download at www.austria.org/passports)

2) 1 passport photo (conforming to www.passbildkriterien.at) – US format accepted, please do not cut the pictures, good picture quality, neutral facial expression (mouth closed).

3) Current passport or official ID. If the applicant holds any other citizenships, the foreign passports have to be presented (US passport etc.).

4) Proof of current residence/address (US driver’s license, utility bill, lease etc.)

5) One of the following documents, which applies to the applicant:

- Permanent Resident Card, - application confirmation or similar
- U.S. visa with I-94 (the I-94 number can be retrieved through https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov )

6) Birth certificate - US birth certificates including city of birth (“long form” or "book copy") and Apostille (> see information on page 3). Additionally, if applicable: Certificate of Birth Abroad

7) If applicable: marriage certificate(s), official name change notice(s) (Namensänderungsbescheid), divorce decree(s) of previous marriage(s). Documents issued in the US must have an Apostille (> see information on page 3).

8) Proof of Austrian citizenship by one of the following documents:

- Citizenship certificate
- Passport (except emergency passport)
- Austrian ID-card

9) If applicable: Permission to retain Austrian citizenship (Beibehaltungsbescheid) and a copy of the naturalization document (e.g. US Certificate of Naturalization)

10) If applicable: Proof of academic degree, if you wish to have the degree entered into the passport (degrees from EU and EEC countries only!) - www.naric.at

11) Loss or theft of passport: police report incl. passport number, place and date of loss/theft. If possible, copy of the lost or stolen passport and visa.

12) Consular fees: (USD) may be paid in cash, as postal money order or cashier's check (made out to "Embassy of Austria"). Personal checks, credit and debit cards cannot be accepted. Please check www.austria.org/consular-fees for current fees. Please make sure to pay the fees which will be applicable for the month of March.

13) A self-addressed and prepaid return envelope or shipping label (USPS Priority or Express) will be required for the delivery of the passport/documents to an address of your choice. The Austrian Embassy will not be responsible for documents after they were mailed!

Additional documents may be required on a case by case basis.

Processing time for a new passport is about 4 to 6 weeks provided that the application is complete. An express passport can be issued within 5 to 7 days. Non-binding information!
