The book and corresponding exhibition Towards the American Century: Austrians in the United States (also currently on display inside the Embassy’s atrium) were presented at the University of New Orleans on August 22, 2019. The vernissage was held at the University of New Orleans Fine Arts Gallery and was hosted by the university’s Austrian Marshall Plan Center for European Studies (Center Austria) and the Department of Fine Arts.
Introductory remarks were delivered by Dr. Kim Martin-Long, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, as well as by co-authors and curators Professor Günter Bischof (Director, Center Austria) and Dr. Hannes Richter (Embassy of Austria in the United States). Guests included the Austrian Honorary Consul-General for Louisiana and Mississippi, Phil Lorio III, as well university faculty and students, and members of the Austrian community in New Orleans.
The book and exhibition are part of an ongoing project and cooperation between the Austrian Press and Information Service at the Embassy and the Austrian Marshall Plan Center for European Studies at The University of New Orleans. The project chronicles Austrian immigration to the United States within the trajectory of historical milestones of Austrian-American relations, from the first Salzburgers on the shores of Georgia in 1734 until today; it highlights aspects of Austrian immigration and also showcases examples of individual contributions.
