On July 18, 2019, Ambassador Wolfgang Waldner officiated the exhibit opening and corresponding book presentation entitled “Towards the American Century: Austrians in the United States”, followed by a summer reception at the Embassy.

The exhibition, which will be on view in Washington (and accessible to the public during business hours) through November 15, 2019 inside the Embassy’s atrium, is part of an ongoing project and cooperation with the Austrian Marshall Plan Center for European Studies at The University of New Orleans. The project chronicles Austrian immigration to the United States within the trajectory of historical milestones of Austrian-American relations, from the first Salzburgers on the shores of Georgia in 1734 until today; it highlights aspects of Austrian immigration and also showcases examples of individual contributions.

The exhibit’s companion book of the same title was also presented and signed by its co-authors Günter Bischof, Professor of History and Director of the Austrian Marshall Plan Center for European Studies at The University of New Orleans, and Hannes Richter, Deputy Director of the Austrian Press and Information Service, on this occasion.

The exhibit opening included remarks by both the Austrian Ambassador, Wolfgang Waldner, and co-author Professor Günter Bischof. As a special guest, the embassy welcomed Marcus Bergmann, Austrian Deputy Director-General for International Cultural Relations at the Foreign Ministry.

The official opening was followed by a summer reception with Austrian beer, wine, a sampling of new Red Bull drinks and snacks, and tunes provided by a Red Bull DJ.
