Human Rights
Did you know that Austria…
- Addresses human rights issues in all meetings with other governments;
- Intervenes on behalf of individuals at risk in hundreds of cases every year, in cooperation with the EU;
- Supports local human rights defenders around the globe through its embassies;
- Supports projects for the promotion of human rights and the rule of law in many countries, for example projects to combat violence against women, female genital mutilation, or the rehabilitation of child soldiers?
The promotion and protection of human rights is a priority of the Austrian foreign policy. Focus areas of our activities are the promotion of women’s rights and the rights of the child; the safety of journalists; the promotion of freedom of religion and belief as well as the protection of religious minorities; combatting human trafficking; the protection of minorities; as well as human rights education. Austria works closely with its partners in the European Union and is active in the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
