Cluster Munitions

The Convention on Cluster Munitions (Oslo Convention) entered into force at the beginning of August 2010. Presently, a total of 84 out of 113 signatories have ratified the Convention. The Convention on Cluster Munitions is the most important disarmament treaty since the Ottawa Convention of 1997 and makes an essential contribution to the further development of international law. It provides for a categorical prohibition of the use, development, production, stockpiling and transfer of cluster munitions, which cause unacceptable harm and suffering to civilians. In the field of assistance to survivors, the Convention – not least due to Austria’s committed efforts – sets forward-looking standards. From 5 to 7 September, 2016, the sixth Conference of the States Party to the Oslo Convention was held in Geneva.
