Austria At President Biden's Climate Summit
On April 23, 2021, alongside the virtual Leaders Summit on Climate convened by U.S. President Joe Biden, Austrian Federal Minister for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology Leonore Gewessler participated in a Ministerial Roundtable with counterparts from 21 other nations hosted by U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry.
Austria’s Climate Action Minister enthusiastically reported on the significant efforts our nations is undertaking to confront the climate crisis: Austria is committed to achieve carbon neutrality (at the latest) by 2040.
“The climate crisis is the greatest challenge of our time. We must all pull together to overcome it.” — Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler
Austria, already a global leader in renewable energy, has a target of a 100% renewable electricity supply by 2030. Reaching these ambitious goals will require bold climate policies, notably in rail transport. Minister Gewessler’s infrastructure plan calls for an unprecedented boost in federal aid to Austria’s passenger rail system, modernizing the network and making rail more affordable.
