University of Chicago Professor Peter Nagele Receives Austrian Cross Of Honor For Science And Art

Washington, October 4, 2021 — The renowned Austrian trauma anesthesiologist and head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care of the University of Chicago, Professor Peter Nagele, has been awarded the “Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art.” The high Austrian decoration, bestowed by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, was presented to Professor Nagele by the Austrian Ambassador to the United States, Martin Weiss, in a formal ceremony held on October 1, 2021, at the Ambassador's Residence in Washington, DC.

Professor Nagele is a leading expert in the field of pharmacology of anesthetic gases and was honored, among other merits, for his significant contribution to the identification of the mechanism of action of volatile anesthetics, nitrous oxide and xenon. Most recently, he succeeded in discovering, that severe depression can be treated successfully with nitrous oxide.

In addition, Professor Nagele has rendered outstanding services to bilateral scientific exchange between Austria and the United States, and to the Austrian research community in North America, e.g. as a founding member and president of ASciNa, a network of Austrian Scientists & Scholars in North America. Under his leadership, ASciNA established the annual ASciNA Award, sponsored by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, and inititated the ASciNA mentoring program for young Austrian scientists in the United States.

About Dr. Peter Nagele:

Born in 1971 in Ried im Inkreis, Austria; medical studies in Innsbruck, then training as anesthesiologist and intensive care specialist at Vienna General Hospital; habilitation and appointment as Associate Professor at the Medical University of Vienna in 2005; appointment as Assistant Professor in 2008 and as Associate Professor in 2015 at Washington University in St. Louis, USA. Since 2018 Chair and Head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Chicago, Illinois. Board member of the ASciNA scientific network since 2002, serving as President from 2008 to 2021. Professor Nagele is the recipient of numerous research awards and grants, including Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship 2004, Billroth Prize of the Vienna Medical Association 2011, and NARSAD Independent Investigator Grant 2016.
